The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Mixed Feedback

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined vision.

The president stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full text from the president's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our audience.

The trust in this project increases every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having dedicated the recent years creating and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the development of the game in the weeks to come.

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Face the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can expect additional details as development progresses.
